We hit Feldman Lumber in Greenpoint on Saturday to pick up an 8′-by-4′ piece of Homasote to create a large bulletin board for our home office. While we didn’t get the friendliest service, it was a successful–and quick–visit. The company’s been around for 90 or so years, it turns out. We’d like to know how their prices for things like plywood and sheetrock stack up against the competition. GMAP

  1. so everyone is buying homasote for this and that but I heard it was carcinogenic. Is this true for shredded recycled paper called homasote? I have read the website of homasote http://www.homasote.com and another company quietboard or something like that and they claim to be “green” companies. How can they say that when they are possibly using formaldehyde in their product? I am so confused but I need to make a decision very soon. I am going to be using it on the flooring in my son’s room as he composes music,

  2. AS A FELLOW CO WORKER TO THE GRUMPY OLD MAN AT THE COUNTER AT FLEDMAN LUMBER THAT GRUMPY OLD MAN IS ONE THE NICEST PEOPLE YOU EVER WILL MEET WHO IS UNDER ALOT OF PRESSURE AT A YOUTHFUL BUSINESS AND KEEPING UP WITH THE BEST OF US …
[THE MAN] AT THE COUNTER HAS MORE KNOWLEDGE THAN MOST IN THIS INDUSTRY BY FAR… GIVE HIM A BREAK HE MAY BE MOVING AT 30 MPH BUT WE ALL WORK AT 100 MPH PACE….

  3. You’re right about Feldman being a great experience for trade and that grumpy old man was knowledgeable but I think all he needs is a large cup of coffee. I shop there all the time.

  4. Feldman Lumber is one of the best outfits in town. I’m an architect in NYC and have been using them since the eaarly 90’s. They have excellent service and competitive prices, which are justified by their good service. I’ve used them for deliveries of large quantities in a very short turnaround time. So what, you can save a dollar on the Homosote at Loews or Home Cheap-o. Feldman, as well as Heavy Lumber and Dykes(for select woods), are REAL Brooklyn supply yards for the trade. Hence, their lack of polish. You go their for the experience alone.

  5. Since its the lumber thread – anyone know of good sources for outdoor decking? I’m looking for 5/4 mahogany tongue & groove (considered Ipe, but the stuff is so hard its harder to use). This seems to be something less than the high-end lumber places carry, but certainly well above HD, Certified, et al.

  6. Homosote is just pressed paper pulp. Covered with paper or fabric, it makes a great bulletin board. After you mess up one side from pin holes, etc, turn it over, recover, and you’re good to go again.

I think both Lowe’s and HD carry it too. One sheet will last for years.
