Photoville Festival Returns to Brooklyn for 10th Anniversary Public Art Exhibitions
The festival will be spread out across 25 locations this year, with opening festivities beginning on September 18 at Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Photoville, the city-wide festival dedicated to public photography programs, is returning for its 10th anniversary.
The festival—which is free and open to the public—will be spread out across 25 locations this year, with opening festivities beginning on Saturday, September 18 with a “community day” in Brooklyn Bridge Park, which will include a family activity area, dance performances, games, workshops and a film screening.
“We believe that the spirit of our annual ‘village’ gathering will be present, because even with 6 feet of distance between us, we are a united community,” said the festival’s founders Laura Roumanos, Dave Shelley and Sam Barzilay in a letter posted to the event’s website.
A number of the noteworthy programs are also located at Brooklyn Bridge Park, including, among many others, the artist Ai Weiwei’s “1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows,” which links the history of China with his own personal story and that of his father, a poet; “Women in the Face of History,” an exhibition regarding the history of women’s suffrage in America; and a retrospective dedicated to New York Times photojournalist Michelle V. Agins.
Elsewhere in Brooklyn, Meryl Meisler’s images of Bushwick in the 1980s and early 1990s will be featured at IS 291 (231 Palmetto Street). Other exhibitions include “Kensington Cares,” a photo series dedicated to local residents and the work they did during the pandemic (Avenue C Plaza, Kensington); a “Community Heroes” series located at both Fort Greene Park and St. Andrews Playground (1405 Atlantic Avenue); and the photographer Jamel Shabazz’s exhibition of images of Prospect Park, which first opened in June in the park.
In addition to the exhibitions, there are a number of professional development sessions, curated walking tours and panels.
The festival runs through December 1. For more information on specific events, visit Photoville’s official website.
