A film about Gowanus’ famous Coignet Stone Building will be screened for a local audience.
“At the Corner of 3rd and 3rd,” a documentary by Max Kutner, will be shown at the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club Boathouse, located at 165 2nd Street. The screening is part of the second annual People Preserving Place Film Festival, presented by the New York Preservation Archive Project.
The structure sat in disrepair for decades until supermarket giant Whole Foods agreed to restore its concrete facade in 2005. But even after receiving permits for the restoration, Whole Foods took its time bringing the building back to life. The Landmarks Preservation Commission fined the grocery chain in 2014 for falling behind on the maintenance and restoration of the landmarked structure.
In 2016, the Coignet building underwent a stunning $1.3 million exterior restoration that brought new life to the once-crumbling landmark
The documentary will be preceded by a short film called “The Waterfront” by Lexi Krupp and Chloe Williams, that highlights the Gowanus Dredgers and the Gowanus Canal Conservancy.
Both films will be shown on Sunday, April 15 at 7 p.m., and there will be a discussion following the event. For more information, click here.
