Gowanus residents are pushing back on the proposal to shut down the Double D Pool so the EPA can build an underground sewage storage tank there as part of the Gowanus Canal cleanup. They are planning a rally against the closure this Saturday, June 29. So far, the EPA has not disclosed a specific timeframe for the pool’s potential closure. Residents are also unsure if the sewage tank installation will disrupt the newly renovated Thomas Greene Park Playground nearby. Despite the lack of information, Gowanus Canal Community Advisory Group member Sabine Aronowsky stated, “Any planned closures to the park and pool must be mitigated by replacement facilities — and these in turn must be added to the clean-up funding. We are fighting to keep our pool provided for before, during and after the Gowanus Canal cleanup, so it may keep providing us with a very efficient way of dealing with increasingly excessive summer heat as a result of climate change.” The rally will be held on the corner of Douglass and Nevins streets from 10:30 to 11:30 am. Council Members Letitia James, Brad Lander, and Steven Levin will attend. The pool is located on Nevins and 3rd Avenue between Degraw and Douglass.) The community previously rallied to save the Double D Pool back in 2010 after it was threatened by budget cuts.
