Before August comes to a close the DOT will begin the implementation of the pedestrian and bicycle access improvements near Pier 6. The details of the plan were first announced in July; the full plan lives here (PDF). The upgrades include rerouting the bus turnaround at the Atlantic-Furman intersection, adding crosswalks, improving signal timing and simplifying traffic on Columbia Street. According to the CB2 newsletter, there is only one addition to the plan since it was last presented to community boards: “In response to a Community Board 6 request, DOT is adjusting signal timing at the intersection of Columbia Street and the BQE on/off ramps to create a conflict free pedestrian crossing here.” The DOT’s had a busy summer in Brooklyn; we just checked in on similar improvements happening over at Grand Army Plaza.
