Signage has gone up indicating that a Bank of America is opening on the northeast corner of Bergen and Flatbush, across the street from the old Royal Video location that may also become a bank branch. The big bank influx makes us wonder whether end times are near for that shady looking check-cashing place at 230 Flatbush. Anyhow, are readers on the Prospect Height-Slope border happy about the beefed-up ATM presence or is it just a snooze? GMAP

  1. truthfully, there aren’t many muggings in this strip of Flatbush down to Dekalb. it’s all rumors. a small space like this is ideal for a mom and pop store size, which is a dying breed. if you’re a newbie, you might be reading a lot from bogus magazine news and hearsay. the heavy traffic and busy subway station make it more visible and much safer. Enough of those cutesy trendy stores, open up a bialy shop!

  2. has anyone that’s freaking out about possible muggings spent time there or do you just assume b/c it’s on flatbush it’s dangerous? I’m in this area quite a lot and while it doesn’t look like 5th Ave (yet – I’m sure it’s coming) I feel perfectly safe. There are few banks in the area so while this seems like a waste of prime space and is boring as all hell, it is actually useful. I know it’s not popular (and since my bank charges me for using other bank ATM’s but not random deli ATM’s I won’t ever use it) but it’s actually probably better for the neighborhood as it’s a service rather than a trendy expensive store.

  3. Unless I missed something, we’re talking about an ATM. Has anyone ever looked at one of these? They’re like 500 SF of space. Not exactly enough room for a gap or IHOP. Those are about 10-20 times bigger. No use losing any sleep over such a small space. That space had been vacant for like 2 years.
