Workers recently uncovered two large and mysterious round structures at 218 Front Street in Vinegar Hill while prepping the site for construction of a new 218-unit seven-story apartment building. Brownstoner reader Marc Agger snapped some photos and sent them to us to see if we could identify the structures.

A look at historic documents revealed the structures are remnants of 19th century coal-gas holders, also known as gasometers. This is where Brooklyn Union Gas Company would store coal gas for lighting in pressurized containers, old maps show. The capacity of the holders could dynamically change according to need.

Remediation of the contaminated site will take place, if it hasn’t already. You can see the renderings for the planned apartment building on New York YIMBY.
