Preservationists and PLG advocates will discuss historic districts and homeowner grant opportunities this month at “Maintaining Landmark Districts,” an event organized by the Prospect Lefferts Gardens Heritage Council.

Staff from the New York Preservation Landmarks Commission, including Erica Rothman, Planning Analyst, and William Neeley, Director of Preservation, will talk about building violations within historic districts as well as grant opportunities. Gregory Dietrich, a preservation consultant and educator, will discuss the issue of new construction within historic districts.

The Landmark Preservation Commission’s grant program, established in 1977, offers funds up to $25,000 to owners of buildings that are individually designated or in a local or National Register historic district to help with restoration projects, largely for exterior work. Attendees can learn more about how their properties might qualify for the program.

Concerned about increased development and the demolition of many Edwardian and Victorian homes in PLG and adjacent areas such as East Flatbush for new construction, residents organized a workshop about how to designate historic districts.

Like that workshop, this latest event is part of a series presented by the Prospect Lefferts Gardens Heritage Council. Another recent workshop covered how to apply for historic rehabilitation tax credits.

The free event takes place Thursday, March 22 from 8 to 9:30 p.m. at the Congregational Church of the Evangel at 1950 Bedford Avenue in Prospect Lefferts Gardens. To learn more and to RSVP, click here.
