It’s kinda fun seeing where hotels pop up around Brooklyn, and we wonder how much location matters for out of towners looking for a place to crash on the cheap. We stumbled upon the Condor Hotel at 56 Franklin Avenue, between Flushing and Park Avenues. It’s on a residential block with not a lot going on in the immediate vicinity, and there’s no word yet on rates. The building looks nice enough, but they’re still working on the inside lobby so the interior is still up in the air. GMAP

  1. Too Cool: Hotels are only allowed in M zoned areas and some high density C zoned districts.

As for “more f.a.r.” that is generally a myth. Sort of like in Soho with the Trump tower. It has a lower floor to area ratio than many if not most industrial buildings in the Soho/Hudson Square area. We unfortunately live in a world where people confused FAR with building height, let alone sky exposure planes.

Regardless, this is a small building. Not sure what your point is with respect to this Hasidim hotel.

  2. “This place is at the edge of Satmar Hassidic Williamsburg, with a huge catering hall on the corner. I think that might be the intended market.”

Maybe that’s it. The others appear to be mostly SROs for single men.

A few others are mysterious. The one on Wyckoff near the cemetery is maybe a truck stop?
There’s another on Bushwick Ave. with a big sign proclaiming it a hotel that appears to be not a hotel at all, as a look through the windows shows one huge room with gigantic factory style florescent lights. Or is that a hallway? The building has few windows and never a car in the lot.

There’s also the historic Akwaaba mansion B&B in Stuy Heights.

  3. yes, it is on the same block as ROSE CASTLE…a very busy catering hall that does lots of functions for hasidics and and african americans.

Also, I wouldn’t call it a residential block…mixed use (warehouses, auto repair, factory, a little retail, and housing.)
