The New York Economic Development Corporation Thursday released renderings of the future Bedford-Union Armory transformation and announced that BFC Partners and Slate Property Group will jointly develop the project.
An architect has not yet been named for the project at 1555 Bedford Avenue, but we do know that the former 138,000-square-foot military facility will become a 500,000-square-foot mixed-use complex that will include 300 apartments (half affordable housing), 12 townhouses, office space, a swimming pool, three basketball courts, and an indoor soccer field.
“We’re really excited to be working with BFC and all the elected officials in the community to bring this much-needed affordable housing and community facilities to Crown Heights,” Slate Principal David Schwartz told Brownstoner.
Slate is currently developing about 350 condo units and 1,400 rentals in Brooklyn, including the luxury condos at 51 Jay Street. BFC Partners’ other Brooklyn projects include City Point’s first tower, 1000 Dean Street, and Toren.
The giant Bedford-Union Armory was built in 1903 for the Troop C Cavalry Unit and handed over to the city from the state in 2013. The NYCEDC issued a request for developer proposals last year and held a series of public meetings about plans.
We’ll be sure to keep you updated as the project progresses through the city’s Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP), in which the local community board, borough president, mayor, and City Council will review and approve or reject the proposal.
