I would like to install interior storm windows in my apartment, to reduce heat loss. Does anyone have recommendations for installers in Brooklyn? Or anyone I should avoid? Is it something a “not very skilled but enthusiastic” person could do themselves?

  1. I could be wrong, but aren’t storm windows a thing of the past since double pane windows are so common and cheap now? Also, they’re butt ugly, don’t you think?

You should be able to get perfectly decent new double pane aluminum windows installed for $200/each.

Check out Ross Windows. They should be in the yellow pages.

Also, any contractor who advertises on this site should be able to pick up and install new windows for you as well . . . it’s a very simply thing to do and makes a huge difference in heat loss as well as appearance if you have old, unattractive, filthy windows.

If you don’t mind spending the extra money, you might consider getting quotes for higher end windows like Anderson, Marvin, and Pella as well, but if they’re too expensive, don’t sweat it. The cheap local Chinese made aluminum windows are perfectly fine.
