Moving Recommendations?
Making the move we’ve dreamed about… from our 1 bedroom in midtown to a great little townhouse in South Slope. Who has recommendations for movers? I’ve heard good things about Flat Rate from colleagues but their estimate seems a little high.

Though they are a national moving company, I’ve had a good experience with US-1 Van Lines (http://www.us-1vanlines.com/). They give on-site estimates and their workers are friendly and reliable.
Forgot to provide their website address. Sorry!

They operate in many cities in the US, and I personally had a wonderful experience with them.

I recommend Milestone Relocation Solutions Inc.. Their pricing is very reasonable, and the moving crews are great!
We just moved last week and used Rainbow movers. This was the second time we used them and they were great. They come to your house first and do an estimate after seeing all of your stuff. Then they give the estimate and when you move, it always ends up to be less than the estimate. They are fair, nice and easy to communicate with.
sorry to double post, but i forgot to mention that none of my moves have ever been above the estimates i was given in man hours or hourly rate etc – and once i was a couple hours lower. they didn’t “dog it” because the estimate was 9 hours – I got the benefit!
the last move most guys didnt speak all that much english, but they know what they are doing and do it well.
Integrity Movers
used them a bunch of times in over 10 year period. they always busted their butts and never damaged a single thing. very honest and upfront.
also remember proper estimating is everything, most people underestimate and are not finished packing by the time movers get there – and grossly underestimate time wise.
so make sure you’re apples to apples when shopping based on how many man hours.
i’ve seen flat rate move someone else and thought to myself that they guys didn’t seem half as good as the guys i’ve had.
I used Intense Movers on my last move. You accurately describe your stuff and they will give you a flat rate quote.
They were late, but for the price it was well worth it.
Google them.
All Star for us, too. Just moved a week ago with them. The price may have been high ($250/hour, 6 men to move and do some packing, 1 hour travel time), but the crew was worth it. Packed things very carefully (much better than I would have), wrapped everything, removed a door when needed to bet a piece through without scratching, took apart and reassembled furniture without complaint.
I think they try to make you feel like things went quickly by estimating much longer than they think it will take, but anyway, the time was half what I was told they thought our move would take (so cheaper, since it’s an hourly rate).
No hassling me about tips, all guys were professional and we would use them again.
When we used Movers Not Shakers for a very small move, a short distance, we weren’t happy. After loading the stuff (less than an hour) they said they would meet me at the apartment. I got there in less than 20 minutes, but they disappeared for several hours and I could get no answers on the phones. When they finally showed up they had no excuse as to where they were and the guys started harassing us for tips before they were done. I guess crews can vary a lot, but that was not a good experience.
I had a good experience with Super Movers. They’ll come to your apartment and give you a binding estimate. They didn’t give us the cheapest estimate (we got lots) but there’s peace of mind with a binding estimate. In the end, our move took longer than all of the hourly estimates so Super Movers worked out to be a pretty good deal.
