Hello –
I’m in the final stages of our remodel (final coats of paint etc) and in our main kitchen we’ve just installed a 36″ ventless cooktop (vent is in the center of the cooktop and sucks air into the cabinet below which has a charcoal box to collect the flow). My contract is concerned that this may not be approved in NYC. This is a reasonably expensive jenn-air cooktop and I’m concerned this this now may fail inspection? Any thoughts?
just an update…finished the inspection and passed. Thanks for everyones input!
as long as there is an operable window in the kitchen you don’t need to vent….so if you chose to vent, you can do anything you want, as it is not required by code
What the OP is describing is whether it’s legal to have a downdraft venting cooktop. It doesn’t suck the air from above. It pulls it underneath the stove into the cabinet below and then filters the odors out through a charcoal filter.
They’re describing this:

It’s all in here:

I would use the search function, it’s almost 700 pages

You should be more concerned that this is an ineffective, noisy way to vent the stove. Get a hood as god intended.
I know some friends of mine did a full kitchen reno around 4 years ago – full permits and coop board approval – and they had a ventless hood like the one you’re describing. I have to assume it’s legal, but.. y’know…don’t quote me.
Ask your archy.
well, again, don’t take my input as law by any means 🙂 knowing what I know about it, I’d probably personally want to make 100% sure before I spent the money and/or time on installation… good luck in any case!
Thanks! I think I’m going to install it and see if it makes it through inspection.
