Does anyone have any advice for sealing brick that has been previously painted and the paint has pulled off the glazed exterior of the brick. It is underneath the front stoop to the entrance of the garden apartment, and layers of just some of the brick have pulled away. It is not bad enough to have to replace the brick but realize the brick must be sealed. Any suggestions on how to treat the brick after the paint has been removed? Thanks!
The paint is probably not the culprit.
tybur6 is a complete idiot.

Research silane / siloxane masoney sealers such as this:

Hope this helps.

Yes – if the fire glaze of the brick has been removed, you need to either “seal” it or replace it. Still, you want something that is breathable, so that moisture continues to move through the masonry (otherwise the coating, and more of the brick, will fail). I’ve had good luck with a Keim consolidant on similar conditions. A more generic sealer (a la tybur6, above) will work, so long as it does not form an impermeable barrier.
Go to store. Buy masonry sealer. Go home. Paint on brick. Let dry.
