This isn’t my skylight but it’s similar. Today’s post Xmas sideways storm has forced snow into cracks in my skylight and caused an ice formation that has started to drip into onto the protective glass and run into my stairwell. While i’m not about to go out there tonight, i’m hoping for a quick end…
be careful on this one. not knowing the details of the condition, these may be required by code and may only be replaced in kind. The good news is that such a replacement is readily available and will not leak. They are actually quite cleverly designed although not for energy conservation purposes because they are designed to vent the shaft.
Skylights – installation recommendationIf there is a decorative stain glass panel beneath the stairwell skylight -- very common in brownstones -- then the skylight is usually fixed in place for obvious reasons. If not, then you can replace it with an energy efficient model that does open and close (same for skylights in individual top floor rooms). I've never heard that it's a code issue.
Multiple Skylight Questionshow are these spaces ventilated if not by the shaft? Do they have windows onto streets? Are they kitchens and baths with exhaust fans? Ventilation is good! Most often, codes require it. Check NYS Multiple dwelling law and NYC Housing Maintenace Code - these say more than any of the building codes
Skylight Building Code ExpertiseIs t the skylight itself or the installation? If the latter, get a roofer.
