Glass panel behind wall mounted toilet and sink?
We’re in the midst of renovating a bathroom in our brownstone, and I’m wondering if any of the architects out there could give me some advice? We’re installing a wall-mounted toilet and sink and I wanted to put a plain white glass panel behind them, to keep the wall clean (also as bath panel and surround). We have crazy floor tile and colour on the ceiling so I didn’t want to do more tile, but rather something minimal, and I am sure I have seen instances where this has been done. However, I have approached 3 different glass companies, and have not yet managed to get a quote out of any of them as they are all unwilling to take the job – this is because there will need to be a number of holes (waste lines, mounting screws, flush and faucet) all within a 4′ x 4′ piece of glass, and they are concerned that is going to be tricky to do. So my question is – can this be done, and maybe it’s just a case of finding a company who has experience with these types of jobs (if so, any recommendations?) or should I be coming up with a different option? If so, would a stone veneer be as problematic as glass? I really don’t want to use more tile as it will get way too busy in a small space. Advice greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks for the advice. i had almost decided to change plans but then supplier #3 came back with a price not horribly unreasonable, so i think we are going to go ahead. Although looking at your reply again reminds me to make sure what provision there is in the contract for the panel not ftting – I can pay for this once, but not twice!

It can be done but will cost you a pretty penny. As you you can see from the calls you have made so far there are not many glass companies that are willing to take something like this on. We did this on a commercial project 4 years ago (6 toilets in total) and from what I can recall the price for each panel was about 6k. Absurd pricing in my opinion but the client wanted it and was willing to pay for it. If you are prepared to do something like this make sure you have all specs for the toilet, roughs and stub outs are in place and be prepared to pay for detailed templates. The company we used must have measured 4 times before cutting the panels and even then they messed up 2 of the 6 but they re-made those 2 at no cost.
