Fireplace
What can be done with these? We are just starting a small bit of work on our house, and we have 3 of these fireplaces. I LOVE the look of them and would love to utilize them somehow. Options? Prices?

I’d also opt for a gas fire. More expensive than gas coals or logs but also much more efficient is an air tight gas insert which pulls combustion air down the chimney from outside. Check out Valor. Call one of the fireplace companies who advertises on this site for advice, like A&A Chimney. Arkady is correct, by the way, that many brownstones fireplaces are purely decorative and were used as vents for a forced hot air system. The importance of this is that the depth is usually minimal and the chimney brick is not designed to withstand the high heat of a WBF — hence the substantial cost of converting to WB.

Start by stripping of the paint and just leave them for later if you cannot afford to reline the flues just yet to get them working. They still make a focal point in a room. It is cheaper to reline two or three above each other rather than both on the parlor for example.

Are your fireplaces part of your heating system? They look similar to mine which are the vents for forced air.

I posted the link. I bought the basic gas coal firebox and used a decorative fieplace cover to hide the exposed bottom. www.gascoals.net which brings you to: http://www.victorianfireplaceshop.com/catalog/item/8877366/10075912.htm I don’t know what they charged to run the gas as it was part of a much larger project and way back in 2008.

davidinbedstuy – what did it cost to have the gas piped over to your fireplace? And how much was was the insert? Would you mind showing a link to something similar?

It’s about 10k to restore one fireplace to working order.
