Who's installed a concentric vent?
Hello! I am looking into a tankless water heater, which requires concentric venting. Does anyone have this set up, and if so were you able to run the vent through the chimney to the roof? Side wall venting is not an option for me, and I’m trying to confirm if running the vent out through the chimney passage will work. If anyone has a good chimney or vent contractor can you share the reference? Thanks!

PS this is the last place on earth i would look for construction advice or references as a builder draftman contractor my whole life i go on here to laugh and cry at the wolves that prey on you yuppies and the cluelessness of such wealthy idiots just keep googling and reading stick to forums of professionals for professionals like heat help etc if youa re polite and humble they will help you out

Im a 35 year HVAC mechanic and draftsman and no Im not interested in sidework. This might me doable some way and may not lots of variables. older hot water heaters are hotter and less acidic so will draw farther and not damage masonry as much still though done not a great idea tankless are high eficency and usually condensing this is acidic and cant simply be dumped in a chimney which BTW was never code as well as not a great solution. it also means they use stainless and some pvc type I do commercial we would never use pvs but one i bought for my own house came withit and its fine. Manufacturer specs are what you really need to understand and follow my guess is you cant go that far up and draw they may have a fan option but if it fail youre dead. certainly you would have to split the combustion air as mentioned which lowers efficiency but might improve draw. Are you sure you cant run the concentric horizontally out the back wall i put all mine in dropped ceilings over bathroom kitchens to keep pipe runs tight and am lucky to have a driveway but my wall boiler im running out the back wall there are code limits to operable windows and intake vents but not too onerous. its a complicated topic even if its what you do for a living main thing is understand the engineering data for that model they may have options.another thing is these are great IF you really understand all the other placement installation requirements and limitations and they suck if some hacks just throws them in. you want really short pipe runs

Both Rinnai and Bosch have a concentric to separate PVC converter…just remember that PVC has been disallowed for venting in NYC, you have to use CPVC or PolyPro. Here is a demo of the Rinnai https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0D7Owqo3wJ0

I don’t know of any concentric vent that is flexible so you’ll need to have a perfectly straight chimney from the water heater to the roof if you’re going that route. Most often, it’s perfectly compliant to take combustion air from street level and exhaust to the roof so keep that in mind as it may help with your venting strategy.
