We’ve rented a penthouse apartment in a brownstone and I’d like to mount something like a [TRX Xmount](http://www.trxtraining.com/products/trx-xmount–2) in the ceiling. How do I know if it will hold and which hardware I need?

I wouldn’t advise mounting it to a ceiling in a old brownstone. In top floors, the joists are roughly 2 by 3’s that hold up the ceiling. The stronger 2 by 8’s hold up the roof higher up. If the ceiling is wood lath and plaster, it might crack. If it’s drywall, everything might hold under pressure if it’s screwed directly into the stud near a wall, not the center of the room.

The joists will be enough if you can use two or three mounts, especially if you are on the top floor. Use 3-4″ lag bolts making sure you have them centered in the joists. Yes, you will damage some plaster doing it. Hardest part will be finding the actual joists if you have a plaster ceiling. BUT, the overriding issue is that I wouldn’t want you doing this if you were a renter. And if you cause a large portion of plaster to fall, which is likely, you won’t be getting your security deposit back.

Second DiBS, if my tenant set up a home gym in my plaster ceilings without permission, I’d be p#@@!d! Why not just join a gym??

Okay, thanks all, I’ll stick to pushups 🙂 Although this was mostly for the kids.
