Cleaning old porous marble

Thanks Steve! I’ve been reading up on it and found directions in a back issue of Old House Journal as to how to make poultice. Seems easy enough.

I just rescued an old marble vanity top from the trash. I believe it’s original to our row of brownstones, and I’m ridiculously happy to have it in my possession. However, has seen some better days – it’s dingy and the stone feels very porous. Any suggestions as to how to clean it without damaging it? There aren’t any major stains, just overall grime. Has anyone tried to clean something similar? How did you do it? I plan on installing it eventually. After cleaning, should it be sealed?

you will need something called a poultice to draw the stains out of the stone. HD does not carry any thing of the sort let alone know what it is. Steve
