Brick Slips

We’re thinking about ripping down our drywall. And placing brickslips over the plaster that exist behind the drywall.

What should we consider before getting someone to help us do this?

not many people do this in brooklyn and even fewer inside houses. many times they simply remove the plaster and expose the brick but some have said that removing the plaster allows easier transfer of sound.

worst case scenario is that the plaster is degraded and crumbling in spots. if this is the case you will want to remove the loose stuff (being mindful that it can have all sorts of hazardous stuff in the plaster and paint dust) and level it off with mortar or a plaster (gauging plaster or maybe structolite).

after that a tiling perseon might be able to set the brick faces using thinset or whatever they recommend.

you really need to be careful with older dust and to keep it from spreading and clean up. this is doubly mindful with women and children around. it is best to have the contents of the old plaster tested by a lab.
