What is the issue with the drywall you are trying to solve? Does it look too perfect or does it swallow up the original moldings or something else? If your surface is less than perfect, you might look into embossed wallcoverings such as Lincrusta and Anaglypta and identical products put out by other brands. (Some inexpensive ones may be available through big box home stores.) Wallpaper requires a perfectly smooth surface, but this may not be the case for embossed wallcovering. I know someone who installed one with a geometric pattern similar to a tin ceiling herself in a bathroom, probably over drywall, and painted it off white. You could check the technical spec sheets for these products to find out if it can be installed directly over brick, cracked plaster, drywall, etc., and what kind of surface preparation is best (such as wallpaper primer).

To cate’s point, it might look fake and cheesy because only modern style bricks are available and they look like home depot. And also, the installer might install them to perfect. To look the part in old houses, things can’t be picture perfect.

I think goblin mentioned them coming off. That could b we failing plaster substrate or not enough adhesive to fill gaps in the uneven plaster.

It may help in addition to skim coating to put like an eifs mesh on the old plaster as they skim coat to stabilize it and disperse the pull of the brick faces over a wider area.

My personal opinion is brick veneer is not my No. 1 choice, it often looks fake and cheesy. Agree with greenwoodgoblin. Also if you remove drywall, there’s no guarantee there is any plaster underneath, and if there is, it’s going to need skim coating after being covered with drywall. Exposed brick on exterior walls can be chilly, and on party walls reduces privacy and increases noise.

I lived in a rental with brick slips in a small section, of the kitchen and I hated it — it looked cheap and fell apart. Another room had an old chimney breast taken down to the actual brick, which was either spectacularly preserved or had been gently sealed — it looked a hundred times nicer. In my current home, the minute I touch anything adhered to the plaster, the plaster starts coming down with it. I wouldn’t count on being able to pull drywall away and then have the old plaster stand as a foundation for brick slip…. If you want to expose brick, you might just have to go all the way down. Plaster can be really nice, too — if yours is well preserved, a limewash might be beautiful.

not many people do this in brooklyn and even fewer inside houses. many times they simply remove the plaster and expose the brick but some have said that removing the plaster allows easier transfer of sound.

worst case scenario is that the plaster is degraded and crumbling in spots. if this is the case you will want to remove the loose stuff (being mindful that it can have all sorts of hazardous stuff in the plaster and paint dust) and level it off with mortar or a plaster (gauging plaster or maybe structolite).

after that a tiling perseon might be able to set the brick faces using thinset or whatever they recommend.

you really need to be careful with older dust and to keep it from spreading and clean up. this is doubly mindful with women and children around. it is best to have the contents of the old plaster tested by a lab.
