Electric Panel Upgrade

I currently have two 100 Amp panels one for the rental and another for my home. I was told that my panel is overloaded though I don’t trip breakers and there are no problems.
Nonetheless I want to purchase other appliances and add lights so I’m thinking of going to 200 Amp panel.
Can someone please confirm that this will need a permit?
Who would you recommend? My electrician is retired and I had an experience with another electrician who purposely disconnected lights to ramp up the scope of a small electric job. I discovered this quickly (architect here and electrician didn’t know this) and fired him. I’m a little gun shy of letting anyone just come in and do this job.

It will require a permit. I am in the same situation you are in and can tell you this: have an electrician analyze your current usage and needs. They use calculations and perhaps tell you you do not need a new panel but can put a sub in.

Ceriello electric in brooklyn and midway in yonkers are two i recommend. I used to recommend munetz and my customers really liked him but he is doing more work on LI and less in here.
