Height for washing machine drain pipe?

We want to put in an under counter front loading washing machine and ideally keep the drain pipe under counter too. I feel like usually you see washer drains up higher behind the machine.
Will it still work properly if the drain is up only like 32”?
Even though it is under counter it will still be accessible.

I read about this issue last night and people are all over the place with what they are saying. Then there is the front load vs top load issue and some guy writes in and says he owns a laundymat and front loaders drain from the bottom. Commercial front loaders maybe but me thinks not residential.

I would call the manufacturer and as for the technial support team. They can tell you the downside to doing this. If you don’t want to call, tell me the make and model number and i will make the call.

Ok. So i ran mine tonight full load and with it running, i took the drain line and lowered it down below the level of the water in the machine and it did not leak out through the hose.

What i would do is call the manufacturer. Ask for a tech support person and usually they give you someone that knows the machines. Tell them what you want to do and ask what could go wrong or what the risks are. I go through this a lot when working on stuff and sometimes they tell you something annoying that you can live with will happen other times they say don’t that you can ruin something.

My guess: the pumps in these have rubber impellers that will not move under the weight of a few inches of water. And the impeller vanes form such a seal that they won’t leak. A guess. Never changed a wsshing machine pump but i have changed scores of other pumps and some allow water to pass through them and some don’t, when they are idle i mean. But, what this means is as the pump ages, it might leak a little.

Yeah but I’m guessing you’re measuring water level on a top loader and for undercounter it would have to be a front loader which has a much lower water height.

I just took a tape measure to my machine. A whirlpool. It looks like the water level on my machine would sit at 28″. Basically, if i set the curl in my out line at 32″, i cannot see how water could run out or siphon on its own.

You can look at this yourself. Measure to the height from the floor where you think the water will sit in the top of the machine. If the curl in that hose is above that, you are good.

When us guys from long island are playing with machines and siphoning fuel to move from one machine to another or in my father’s case siphoning water from a crappy old fishing boat, we don’t have directions to read.

End of hose is not the key point. Top of the curl in that hose is the point at which water will have to climb to get out. If water is able to pass through the pipe and climb out, it will drop to that level where the curl is – 32″ if that is it.

A licensed plumber will know how to install this properly yes. But unless i know a licensed person, i don’t consult these people when we are trying to “fudge” things. It is wrong to expect those people to do things we know are wrong. I always have someone i can ask what the risks are when i break the rules but i don’t ask them to do the work.

I am thinking the pumps on these machines could have a rubber like impeller that seals to the side of the housing and might keep the water in. It might also not spin under the weight of 4″ of wster. I have never taken one of these apart but a lot of cheap plastic pumps are made that way. I know the pumps are plastic, i had one changed on my machine a few years back.

What they are afraid of is after a cycle ends and is pumping water out and new water is coming in, that the water leaving the line that is lower than the water level in the machine, will pull the new water out of the machine with the old. What is need is an air gap between the end of the drain hose and wherever that water is going. Most of these modern in wall drain hook ups seem to provide that any way. The bad thing to would be to seal the drain line to a pipe of similar diameter with a clamp and have that pipe travel to a larger waste line. This could enable the weight of the water going out to pull water up behind it and take it with it at least until it encountered a larger pipe or vent.

With the larger drain pipes in the wall and air gaps and a hose that does not extend too far into the drain it should be ok.

But, and i am only thinking of this as i write. What happens if you do a full load and the water level in the machine is higher than the end of that hose? Will the water flow through the pump and go out on its own? I have laundry to do now but not the time to do it this morning. Later i will run the machine with a full load and i will pull the hose out and lower the curl in it to below the water level in the machine and then to the height you are saying and see what happens. This sort of thing may or may not affect all machines the same as maybe some have a way to prevent it.

I believe 36 inches is standard. Definitely check the washing machine specs, as Jeremy says. A licensed plumber would of course know the right way to install it for your particular situation.

I manage a 40 unit building where this is a typical existing circumstance with 24 inch wide washing machines under kitchen counters. We haven’t seen any problems regarding the issue. Go as big on the drain pipes as you can if you choose this option. You don’t want to reduce drain capacity any further. Also check specs on your appliance model to make sure there are not any design issues if choosing this option
