Hydro jetting
So… after having a roto-rooter guy come out and snake the waste line that backed up all over our basement floor (hours before a dinner party…naturally…), he said it’s a temporary fix bc we have like 100 years of grease in the pipe. We need to do something he called hydro jetting (for $1800). My concern (other than the price) is whether or not these 100-year-old pipes can even handle that process. If they burst, then what?
Has anyone ever done this? With whom? For how much? What was the process? And how did it work out?
Thanks!
Katie

Roebic brand bacteria based main drain / septic cleaners work like a charm for helping me keep the plumbers and broken buried pipes away

pay someone to run a camera down there first before you take that risk. i almost had mine snaked a few months back and ended up not having to:
i had several problems with my sewer line for a period of like 4 years. it got progressively worse to the point i was opening the trap once every month or so. i do not mind getting my hands dirty so in this process, i began running water (a lot of water) and i noticed (or felt) that it was not the line to the street but back in the house. Specifically, i was beginning to think it was in the trap (i am not a plumber; it took me two days of watching this mess and a lot of “stuff” rise up onto my basement floor). i went so far as to buy a wet vac and suck the water out of the trap, hoping that when i opened the vac, i would be filled with 100 years of stuff that had made it down the drain (a small bit of sand and scale rust, really nothing). eventually, i reached my hand into the trap and on the outbound side (street side) along the edge where the top of the trap goes from the low point to up and out (the inside of the curve, if you will, street side) was a lump of something that made me think of old soap. it was probably hard greese and soap. it had reduced the outlet size of the trap to something like 2″. i broke it all off. that was several months ago (like 6?) and no issues since.
have someone check that entire line with a camera. be sure they check the trap. you do not want anyone unnecessarily putting anything down the waste line.

We have our waste lines snaked every so often by a longtime local mom and pop licensed plumber who specialize in drains. We’ve seen the pipe-shaped very long cylinder of solid grease they extract from our kitchen. Never had any need for “hydro jetting.” Sounds unnecessary and, as you point out, risky with old pipes.
