Disability and Apartment Purchase in Brooklyn

My husband and I are about to start our search to purchase an apartment. Difficulty level = my husband has a mobility disability and it is permanent. We require either a ground floor unit, or a low-rise elevator building so he can get in and out with his wheelchair. One of the biggest challenges we are facing is where to buy. We are of course, limited by price (our ceiling is 875k.) We’d love a 2 bedroom, but we also need to try to stay closer in as my husband takes daily Access-A-Ride trips. (Imagine a regular one-way subway trip from your neighborhood and then triple the time.) He works in Chelsea, and it takes him almost 2 hours most days to get to work. We’d like to avoid making the commute even longer by buying further out. I’d love to get suggestions from people about where they’d live, given the price range and our needs. We rent in North Park Slope today, but know we cannot afford to buy in our neighborhood. We are looking toward South Slope and beyond – Windsor Terrace and as well as Clinton Hill or Crown Heights, or Prospect Heights. One of the things we love about where we live now is that my husband can wheel down the street to the barber, get coffee, etc. It’s great for his independence and we’re trying to find a place where he can retain that. I’d also love to get any recommendations for agents who have either found homes for disabled clients, or can work with us and will really understand that we have limiting factors in our search. I do also realize this makes our potential pool of available apartment much smaller. We’ve reached out to the Mayor’s Office of Disability, but most of the housing advice is geared toward finding rental units and low-cost housing. Would appreciate any advice from seasoned owners and real estate professionals! Thanks, Alex
