Hi everyone.

As my handle suggests, we are former Bed Stuy residents and just bought in Cypress Hills.

If you are looking to buy and have a budget of under $1M this is a great place to look but a few suggestions.

20 minutes away from the new 170,000sf Netflix facility in Bushwick so this place will blow up as a result of the adjacency.

We bought between Fulton and Jamaica so we are walking distance to the park which has tennis, walking trails and baseball fields. It is very family and dog friendly.

There are plenty of places with garages if you look hard enough and time is limited to find something like this for under $1M. Street parking can be challenging if you come home late…not gonna lie.

If you travel a lot for work, the neighborhood is centrally located to LGA and JFK with both being about 15 minutes away.

The produce around here is amazing and you can get fresh coconut water right from the fruit for next to nothing.

You’ll definitely brush up on your Spanish.

Welcome to to neighborhood! We’ve been here 8 years after living in nyc for 25 years and we’ve never understood why this neighborhood is as little known as it is.

Half hour to Manhattan on train, the most amazing park and ridgewood reservoir five minutes from your house, same level of safety as way more expensive neighborhoods – I just don’t get it. We are in planning stages for a dog run btw downstairs at Highland Park.

Be sure to look up our gallery www.nortemaar.org on Pine near the Crescent stop – we have a great exhibit up now and will have closing party- many neighbors come and it’s really relaxed and friendly.

Norte Maar is also behind the giant mural going up now near the handball courts at the park and two others at Mellor’s drug store and at Pine and Fulton.

I’m also on the board of the Forest (and Highland) Park Trust. So basically a neighborhood cheerleader.

Oh and don’t forget we’re also 20 minutes from the Rockaways beaches and 20 minutes from Elmhurst and its amazing food choices, among other things. Bushwick and ridgewood are only 10-15 minutes away. We’ve been called the Bushwick Suburbs and it fits.

We bought a super cute house in Cypress Hills a few months ago but it needs to be renovated so we likely won’t move in until late next year. So far it’s been great, our next door neighbor is extremely kind and watches the house because he knows we’re not there full time yet. Where are the good fruit places? Street vendors?

I’ve often wondered why Cypress Hills doesn’t get more attention. I suppose articles about high crime rates, like the one in the Times Metropolitan section yesterday have something to do with it, but I suspect that this is distorted since the neighborhood shares a precinct with East New York.
My neighborhood, PLG, was similarly disparaged because our crime statistics were skewed by what happened in the eastern end of our precinct, miles away. That’s what lead me to become an active poster here in the early 2000s. Anyway,’ as a long-time PLG booster, posts like this warm my heart.

My impression is that Cypress Hills and Woodhaven are becoming more known to people whose center of gravity is Bushwick and Williamsburg versus Manhattan. I work in the arts with most of my work being in or near Bushwick and I have several colleagues who are moving further out on the J train as far as Woodhaven Blvd. This is anecdotal, of course but definitely seems likely to continue.

So i wanted to say something like this : if more like minded people moved into cypress and woodhaven, there can be a nice commercial strip on jamaica ave with restaurants and cafes. It won’t happen. Those elevated train lines are not condusive to higher rents and people sipping a glass of wine or tea. Its a shame. Some nice houses albeit smaller. Also wood frame, not sure how that goes. But they have a supermarket in cypress hills; woodhaven has a great library and forest park. A golf course for those people. And the woman who wrote “a tree grows in brooklyn” lived in woodhaven, across from the library.

So much potential.
