Those looking to glimpse inside some of the architectural delights of Bed Stuy will get a chance this month with the 46th edition of the Brownstoners of Bedford-Stuyvesant house tour. The tours typically feature a dozen or so private residences with a variety of original features, modern updates, and states of completion, all showing the “creativity and style that define the area,” as the organization puts it on their event page.

Tour goers can glean ideas for renovation and restoration, and owners are usually on hand to share battle stories, renovation tips, and recommendations.

The signature event for the civic-minded organization went virtual in the midst of the pandemic in 2020, providing supporters with a guided video tour of a handful of houses within the historic neighborhood. It returned to an in-person last year when, despite rainy weather, enthusiastic participants toured through houses, eyeing period ornament and some recently completed renovations. Private homes weren’t the only attraction at last year’s event: Ticket holders were able to take a behind-the-scenes tour of the historic St. Philip’s Episcopal Church.

This year the self-guided tour will take place on Saturday, October 19. The tour was the first initiative of Brownstoners of Bedford-Stuyvesant, which was founded in 1978. In addition to building a community to foster Bed Stuy’s culture and heritage, the tour also raises money for scholarships. Proceeds from the tour will go to a fund that to date has given out over $100,000 in scholarships to seniors from the Boys and Girls High School to support their college dreams.

The day begins with a free homeownership workshop from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and then the house tour runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. To find out which houses are on the tour you will need to have a ticket and check in at the starting point at Boys and Girls High School at 1700 Fulton Street. Ticket holders will receive a brochure with all the details; the brochure is required for entry into each of the homes on the tour.

Tickets are available online for $40 (plus a service fee) until October 19. Tickets on the day of the tour will be $45. For more information about the event and to purchase a ticket, visit the event page online.
