A man who intervened to stop a car break-in near the corner of Grattan and Knickerbocker in Bushwick was shot dead just before 8 a.m. Tuesday. A 13-year-old girl who was on her way to school was also wounded by a bullet that grazed her hip, as was a second man.
Three suspects fled the scene and headed south on Knickerbocker, according to police quoted by News Pix 11.
While the area is not without crime, fatal shootings are rare — particularly around 8 a.m. While there is still industry there, such as the Boar’s Head distribution center, the warehouse and factory area has attracted many loft-dwelling residents as well as nightclubs, bars and restaurants in recent years — Roberta’s being the most famous.
Developers are also planning large complexes mixing office, artist and retail space nearby. The city considers the area East Williamsburg.
