Dumbo
Begun as a ferry landing, the name Dumbo is an acronym for Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass, a title created by area artists during the 1970s in an attempt to ward off developers (they nearly went with Danya — District Around Navy Yard Annex). Located at the foot of Brooklyn, the area has seen a renaissance in the past few decades. Historic manufacturing complexes that once created Brillo soap pads and paper boxes are now full of modern homes and offices for the likes of Etsy and BlankSlate. Full of noise and energy from the water and infrastructure, Dumbo is also home to Brooklyn Bridge Park, St. Ann’s Warehouse, and the soon-to-open Empire Stores complex.
