The popular Brooklyn site Brownstoner has jumped the fence to Queens with their new Astoria Renovation blog about a couple’s renovation of a historic Astoria two-family row house. It seems the proximity to work and lower prices moved the couple’s focus from doing a renovation in brownstone Brooklyn to Astoria.
The owners of the house are writing about the renovation themselves.
My partner and I are renovating this row house in Astoria, Queens – 29th Street in the Ditmars area. (Initially I didn’t know if we would make the Brownstoner Brooklyn cut, but after they included a project in Philadelphia, I figured they could showcase one from their Neighbor to the North.) I love traditional brownstones with their period details, but Brooklyn didn’t make sense for us from either a practical or financial standpoint.
What we aim to do with our renovation is to extend the front-of-house character throughout the structure and onto the back, giving the building an elegance it never actually had, and fulfilling the promise of the façade.
This house does have a garage and the stone detail around the windows look good.
We’ll keep an eye on this as the project progresses.
