Over on Atlantic Cities, they are running an article called The Neighborhoods With the Most Single Ladies (and Men), focusing on the straight singles/dating scene in various urban areas around the country. To get to their conclusions Trulia looked at the ratio of men living alone to women living alone; gays and lesbians were taken out of the equation; and those over 65 were, too (apparently ” differences in life expectancy skew the gender ratio in the later years”). Data was culled from the 2010 decennial Census; additional details on methodology is at the bottom of the Atlantic Cities article.
In the “big three power centers of the Northeast: Washington, D.C., Boston, and New York” women outnumber men. In the NYC metro area, the number of women living alone per man living alone is 1.07. However, even within big metros, there are neighborhoods where men outnumber women. You can see in the map above that western Queens has a lot more men, with what is likely Ridgewood as that big dark blue patch in the middle of Queens. There are more women the further out you go and Forest Hills/Glendale/Middle Village is bright pink; Bay Terrace (north of Bayside) and Springfield Gardens (just north of JFK) is, too.
The article states, “In New York, Lower Manhattan and parts of Queens, including Long Island City, have more men living alone than women living alone.” And of the 10 largest metros country-wide, LIC ranks up there as one of the best neighborhoods for finding single guys; it has one of the highest ratios of men to women. The article’s authors believe that newly redeveloped areas are attractive to men. So straight ladies, head to LIC to expand your dating prospects (you can have dinner or a drink at any of these great places while you’re in the neighborhood, too)
