Faling in Love With Waltz-Astoria's Watermelon Icy

One of the best things about summer in Astoria is the arrival of the Watermelon Icy, a frozen slushy drink made at Waltz-Astoria on Ditmars Blvd. It’s basically watermelon and ice ground up with a little sugar.

They pulverize it all together in a high powered blender (looks like a Vitamix) then pour it into a glass with a domed lid (because there’s so much in each serving they have to mound it on top). Stick a straw in and take a taste – it’s an explosion of fresh watermelon flavor. And not too sweet, despite the sugar.

Since it’s been so hot this summer, this has been a real refresher of a drink. Summer’s not going to last much longer, so give the Watermelon Icy a try before it’s too late.
