il bambino Astoria Queens tomato mozzarella pesto panini

This week, Zagat Buzz on Business Insider published their list of the top eight sandwiches in NYC, with Il Bambino in Astoria leading the way with the top sandwich. Leo’s Latticini (AKA Mama’s) in Corona was number two. They beat out heavy hitters like Bouchon Bakery and Porchetta in Manhattan.

Zagat, with their signature quoted text describes Il Bambino as such:

“Fantastic” panini fashioned from “unbeatable” breads and “quality ingredients” plus lots of “affordable wines” are the focus of this “relaxing” Astoria Italian; a “nice” garden, modest prices and “fast, friendly” service seal the deal.

They also received the ratings of Food: 27; Decor: 20; and Service: 22, with an average cost of $23.

We are fans of Il Bambino here at QueensNYC, and included their panini in our own list of the 7 best sandwiches in Astoria.

Leo’s Latticini got the Zagat treatment with this description:

“Nobody makes a sandwich” like this “family-run” Corona “old-school Italian deli” dating to 1920, where the subs are “fit for royalty” and the mozz is among the “best in the boroughs”; its Citi Field stand services “Mets fans” on game day, but unfortunately without those “adorable ladies” behind the counter.

They received ratings of Food: 26; Decor: 12; and Service: 23, with a cost of $14.

We can attest to the fact that the sandwiches are truly delicious at Mama’s.
