Crain’s reports that Socrates Sculpture Park just received a gift of $300,000 — the largest gift the 4.7-acre park has received in its 27-year history. Socrates will distribute the money over a three-year time frame, and it will go towards some exciting new park additions. Socrates plans to start up a shuttle service from the Queensboro Plaza subway stop during peak months, considering the park is about a mile away. The nonprofit park also plans to build an enclosed structure within the park to use for educational purposes. This will allow the park to expand its arts programming to serve as many as 12,000 students. Finally, the park will upgrade its bathroom facilities. The port-a potties will be replaced by a trailer with lights, running water and toilets. The donors, Donald and Shelley Rubin, are known for their work in the arts — they founded the Rubin Museum of Art in Manhattan, and have also donated to the Queens Museum and the Bronx Museum of the Arts.
