New coffee shop in LIC partners with rooftop neighbor, Brooklyn Grange farm

COFFEED, the new café that’s outfitted in recycled materials and minimalist design, selling sustainable and local products, and promoting urban agriculture, looks a little out of place on the strip of Northern Boulevard that’s home to car dealerships, auto body shops, self-storage facilities, superstores, and parking lots. But there’s a new sort of vibe growing at the building at 37-18 Northern Boulevard (GMAP), which is also home to rooftop farm Brooklyn Grange, the New York office of the Jim Henson Company, and tech startups such as internet TV company Aereo.

The cafe’s hip chalkboard menu lists single-origin coffee and other beverages, baked goods, and sandwiches. The food is surprisingly inexpensive (sandwiches are $5 to $7 apiece), considering the fact that COFFEED partnered with Apiary of the East Village to produce its menu.

Brooklyn Grange now has its farm stand in the corner of the coffee shop, where you can buy super-local fresh produce as well as goods like honey and hot sauce. And to further support urban farming, COFFEED donates a percentage of its sales to City Growers, the nonprofit educational arm of Brooklyn Grange.

Speaking of the farm, visitors are welcome to go up to the rooftop on Wednesday afternoons (market days) and stroll among the crops while taking in an awesome view of the city. Just press “R” in the elevator to get up there.
