Like it or not, every US citizen needs the Social Security Administration. The Queens Gazette reports that a new SSA office opened up recently in Dutch Kills at 31-10 37th Ave (GMAP) and will serve quite a large population, since it will incorporate SSA offices that were closed in Astoria, Long Island City and Jackson Heights. They have signed a lease to occupy close to 11,000-square-feet on the ground floor of this building, the Alma Corporate Headquarters.
The building used to be a warehouse (it sure looks like it). In 2007, Alma Realty made some serious renovations to it, including adding two additional stories (originally it was three, now it’s five), as well as adding an elevator and parking underground.
For Social Security concerns, there will be 17 service windows available for both walk-in clients and those folks with appointments. There will also be two managers and two client aides on hand to help, and they will be there from 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday. If you have questions about this SSA office or you want to make an appointment, you can call 1-800-772-1213.
Dutch Kills is a neighborhood that is growing and changing. The real estate side of things is expanding, thanks in part to the zoning change a few years ago, and now over 20 hotels have made their home in Dutch Kills. We’ve seen JetBlue move from Forest Hills into the green Brewster Building just north of Queens Plaza. On the food front we are anticipating the opening of Windmill Tap & Grill, and relishing the steaks at S Prime. The artist center Flux Factory is in Dutch Kills and No Longer Empty is opening up an art installation for three months in the old Bank of Manhattan building (AKA the clock tower building). Even some of the earliest European artifacts live in Dutch Kills (the historic millstones were recently relocated in Dutch Kills Green). We look forward to see what’s next for this part of LIC.
