We heard this sad story with a happy ending on the radio yesterday and found that CBS had also filed a report online. Salman Hamdani, a 23-year old NYPD cadet and paramedic who tried to save people in the twin towers on 9/11, will have a street named after him. It will be the street he lived on, 204th Street near 35th Ave in Bayside (GMAP).

That’s the happy; the sad part, is that he was first viewed as a terrorist. He was reportedly seen walking out with a Koran in hand, which apparently led some people to come to erroneous conclusions. His mother Talat says, “They tried to insinuate that he may be linked with the terrorism attack itself.” But he really gave his life during 9/11, and later it was discovered that “his remains were found in 34 pieces near the north tower of the World Trade Center.”

Community Board 11 unanimously voted to rename the street. CB 11 Chairman Jerry Iannece said, “It’s a good day for America when we’re able to right a wrong. It wasn’t a tough decision at all. We’re a compassionate community.”
