Photos of a NYC subway system long ago

Well, maybe not super long ago, but the early 70s, when the subways were quite a different scene. Narratively has an essay about photos taken by Erik Calonius, a freelance photographer – one of 20,000 hired by the EPA to document the environment in America in the 70s for a project called “Documerica.” He was assigned NYC and was “enthralled” by the subway system. Looking at these photos, you’d hardly know they were the same subway system as we have today. Check it out – the photos are amazing.

Get ready for Woks and Lox on Christmas Eve

Last year Queens residents Jeff Orlick and Veronica Chan put together a fabulous food event called Woks and Lox, highlighting the gustatory bond between Asians and Jews on Christmas Eve. It was such a success that they’re at it again this year – same place (The Queens Kickshaw), same chef (Chichi Wang). SingleCut Beersmiths will be brewing a special Sichuan Peppercorn and Matzoh Lager just for the event. It should be an amazing time. So what happened to Jamaica Bay itself after Hurricane Sandy?

Well, we’re glad you asked that question. In general, Jamaica Bay did not do well after Hurricane Sandy. The marshland did ok, but there are all sorts of problems – debris in the Bay, breached ponds (one of which helped to damage the subway tracks leading to Broad Channel), altered habitat. Dan Hendrick, who is making a film of Jamaica Bay, called Jamaica Bay Lives, believes that nature is resilient and will fix a lot of the things, but humans will have to help out with some of the repairs (like the breached ponds).

Sweetleaf gets some blogger love

The folks at The Coffee Compass blog sure love Sweetleaf. They say it “lives up to the hype and reputation” and we couldn’t agree more. They enjoyed the coffee beans and the way the milk was prepared (love their microbubbles). The space and baristas also got high marks. Congrats, Sweetleaf!
