The circa 1888 Neo-Grec at 354A Gates Avenue has incised lintels, a door pediment with foliate brackets and a bracketed cornice. There’s a modern front door and the listing photos seem to show that the brownstone facade was not included in the recent renovation project.
The house last sold in 2018 and from listing photos then it looks like there weren’t many historic details left to salvage on the interior. The legal three-family is currently set up as a double duplex. With the recent reno both units of the 17.83 foot wide house have been given identical, open plan layouts for the main living spaces. Each has a kitchen in the center with a small living room tucked on both ends. Finishes are consistent throughout, with pale wood floors, simple moldings and white-painted exposed brick walls. The listing photos definitely emphasize the styling of the space, attempting to show how seating areas might work in the potentially challenging living areas.

Both kitchens have sleek white cabinetry, black countertops and white tile backsplashes. Each unit has a full bath off the kitchen and another on the bedroom level; there’s an extra full bath in the cellar for the lower duplex. The bathrooms shown all have black tile floors, white tile walls with dark grout, and streamlined mirrors and lighting fixtures.
The lower duplex has three bedrooms on the garden level and a playroom and the aforementioned bathroom in the cellar. The upper duplex has three bedrooms, two with skylights. Both units have a washer/dryer tucked into a closet. There is central air throughout.
The rear garden appears to have a new fence, and some pathways through the lawn but looks like it could use some finishing touches.
It last sold in 2018 for $1.6 million and now, after a renovation, it is asking $2.45 million. The listing, from Justin Dupree and Abby Dupree of Compass, has a virtual tour online. What do you think?
