Bed Stuy Queen Anne Three-Family With Pier Mirror, Mantels, Moldings Asks $2.5 Million

This Bed Stuy Queen Anne is an intriguing one, even with only a glimpse of a few rooms. There is lots of original woodwork, albeit painted, as well as a pier mirror and mantels in the estate condition three-family at 259 Jefferson Avenue in the Bedford Historic District.
Builder and owner George Phillips filed plans to build six brick and stone dwellings on this section of Jefferson Avenue in January of 1886. While sometimes Phillips is credited as the architect of his properties, in this case Manhattan architect John G. Prague was enlisted. At No. 259, Prague gave the house a brownstone base and parlor level with brick upper stories. The 20-foot-wide house has a shallow, full-height bay, and the facade is enlivened with swags, urns and even a Green Man. The historic tax photo provides an enticing view of stained glass windows, though it is unclear if those are still in place.
The handful of listing photos show some of the details that have survived on the interior, and the listing promises more, including built-ins, pocket doors, six mantels and wood floors. Carpeting on many of the floors makes it hard to judge their condition.

While the floor plans show a kitchen on each level, according to the listing the three-family is set up with an owner’s duplex with mini split air conditioning on the garden and parlor levels and floor-through apartments on each of the two floors above. A new owner might want to do some reconfiguring of the layout.
Just the galley kitchen on the parlor level is shown, and while a design tweak might be in order it appears in good shape with wood cabinets and a tile floor. There is one full bath per floor, and the second-floor one shown has bead board and white tile along with original window trim.
The house hasn’t been on the market since the 1980s. Listed with Ban Leow, Howard Ramlal and Nabil Mouzannar of Brown Harris Stevens, the property is priced at $2.5 million. If you want to see it in person there is an open house, by appointment only, on Sunday, October 3 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Do you like what you see?
