This two-bedroom garden duplex in Prospect Heights has a stone mantel and working fireplace in the living room and crown molding, central air, a nice outdoor space, and a carpeted cellar with half-bath set up as a rec room. Two bedrooms in the back face the garden, one with a wall of closets fitted into its 28 foot length, the other outfitted with a door out to a slate patio and garden landscaped with pines.

The modern kitchen has Shaker wood cabinets, stainless steel appliances, white subway tile and an island. The 2.5 bathrooms have radiant heat floors. The master bath, pictured, has a modern marble-topped vanity, marble hex tile floor, white subway tiles on the wall, a towel warmer, and a glass-enclosed step-in shower with an integrated seat.

162 St. Marks Avenue is in the Prospect Heights Historic District and was originally constructed circa 1879 by architect John Monas, a little known builder and Brooklyn resident born in 1811 to French parents, according to the designation report, which notes that this row of three is his only known work. Unfortunately this one as well as its neighbor were both altered, this one in 2008 just before the designation, with a pop-up visible on the rooftop and surfacing that has removed some of the subtle Neo-Grec detail still extant on the facade of No. 158, along with what appears to be original ironwork. It retains the bracketed cornice with dentils and strappy Neo-Grec ornamental details, however.

The building has only three units, which might make getting a mortgage tougher. The good amount of space in the cellar is an advantage, but with no windows there are no legal bedrooms below the garden level.

It has low monthlies, with common charges $175 and taxes $1, thanks to a tax abatement. Compass agents Gabriele Sewtz and Rob Schlederer are showing it in an open house on Wednesday, March 13 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Worth the $1.799 million ask?
