This one-bedroom rental is tucked into the heart of Willowtown, a little enclave on the southern edge of Brooklyn Heights. The first-floor unit at 42 Willow Place is one of just three in the 19th century row house and offers a shared garden, laundry in the building and bike storage.
The Greek Revival-style brick row house dates to the late 1840s and the picturesque street is filled with buildings of a similar vintage. The street is within the Brooklyn Heights Historic District, and the area has its own community group — the Willowtown Association was formed in 1953.
It’s a floor-through unit with a living room facing the street, bedroom at the rear and kitchen in the middle. A wall was taken down between what would have been two separate rooms to create an open living and dining room with wide-plank floorboards. One long wall is exposed brick, painted white, and the rear portion of the room has a decorative brick fireplace and a tin ceiling.
The kitchen has a fair bit of cabinetry fit into what looks like a tight space and it all appears in good repair. There are white Shaker-style cabinets and a dishwasher.
The bedroom has two windows overlooking a brick-paved shared garden with raised planters and a bench. The listing notes there is a wall of shelving and a closet just outside the bedroom. Access to the bathroom is through the bedroom.
While there’s no laundry in the apartment there’s a shared laundry in the basement along with bike storage. It’s also worth noting the intriguing neighbors. While many of the buildings on Willow Place date to the 19th century, No. 42 is sandwiched in between the unusual mid-century modernist houses designed by architect Joseph Merz on what were once empty lots on the street.
Rent on the unit is $3,250 a month and it is listed with Athenes Bauza of Brown Harris Stevens. Worth it?
