Brooklyn Heights Jazz-Era One-Bedroom With Parquet, Moldings, Dishwasher Asks $3,600

A compact one-bedroom for rent in a 1920s Brooklyn Heights apartment building turned co-op boasts a foyer, period wall moldings, and parquet. It’s on the top floor of a six-story, 60-unit brick elevator building at 30 Clinton Street.
Construction began in 1925, and the building opened in 1926 as Arnold Court. Designed by architect Mortimer E. Freehof, it has an exterior of red brick laid in the Flemish bond pattern, “relived by cornices, dentils, and quoins,” as a newspaper article of the time put it.
The efficient apartments of one, two, and three rooms contained a popular novelty at the time, advertised as Murphy-in-a-dor beds. “The keynote of the living quarters is utility of space and comfort for the occupant. Such modern features as permanent metal kitchen equipment, radio outlets, and built-in furniture of the ‘California type’ for living rooms will be a feature throughout,” the article detailed.
No Murphy bed appears in this unit, but the apartment contains a few crannies that might have once held one. The front door opens into a good size foyer with a deep closet, a floor plan in an old listing shows.
The great room has two windows, paneling and wall molding, and parquet. Built into a corner nook is a recently updated kitchen with white subway tile backsplash, gray Shaker-style cabinets, and a dishwasher.
The bedroom has a window, closet, and wood plank floors. In the classic black and white bathroom is tile up to the ceiling, a pedestal sink, and the original deep corner tub. A linen closet in the hall brings the total closet count to three.
Just outside the historic district, the building faces the new public library at the base of luxury tower One Clinton. It has video intercoms, a bike storage room, and laundry in the basement.
The co-op requires a board interview and approval, a $350 application fee, and a $1,000 refundable move-in deposit. The broker fee is 15 percent of the yearly rent, and the unit is available March 15. An open house is set for Saturday, February 3 from 1 to 2 p.m.
Listed by Heather Cooper of Compass, the apartment is priced at $3,600 a month. What do you think?
