A Zen-Like Oasis and Three Other Townhouses to Tour This Weekend, Starting at $1.2 Million

Our open house picks this weekend are a varied lot, including one with an unusual renovation of a type seldom seen in Brooklyn. They span single-families and multi-families, gut renovated and in need of updating, brick and brownstone, detached and not. They’re found in Boerum Hill, Dyker Heights, Fort Greene and West Midwood.
First up is a four-story Italianate brick townhouse on Clermont Avenue in Fort Greene. It’s beautifully renovated within, in a style not often seen within a 19th-century Brooklyn row house, one that’s modern and heavy on blond wood appointments and accents, with a seeming Japanese influence. It’s serene, distinctive and quite lovely. The house is a four-story with two rentals and a lower duplex, though the duplex has an unconventional layout, with a bedroom, living room and kitchen on each floor. The backyard is planted with willow trees and there’s a parlor-floor terrace with built-in seating.
Next up, a landmarked four-story brownstone on Dean Street in prime Boerum Hill, which according to the listing dates back to 1871. As with the last one it’s a three-family, with a duplex below and two floor-through units above — and as with the last one there’s an unorthodox layout to the duplex, which has an internal staircase and only a single proper bedroom. The house has been renovated, though not lately, and some of the original detail has been lost, but there remains six working fireplaces with marble mantles, tin ceilings, and crown moldings. Some updating may be needed.
The next one’s a single-family, a standalone found on Rugby Road in West Midwood, designed by the prolific early 20th century architects Slee and Bryson. It was gut renovated eight years ago, according to the listing, and is move-in ready, with new electric and plumbing. There’s plenty of space, with four bedrooms, including an expansive master with a walk-in closet and an en-suite bath, a large living room with a decorative fireplace, a dining room with a coffered ceiling; a play room, a laundry room, a “guest sleeping area,” an office and a library with built-in bookshelves. Take note: they’re putting out a Monday deadline for offers, so if you like the looks of this one you need to move.
Finally, we’ve got a semi-detached early 20th century Tudor-esque brick house on 14th Avenue, on the edge of Dyker Heights. This one’s been in the same family for over 80 years, according to the listing, which asserts that it’s been “lovingly maintained.” Condition looks good, though updating is needed — it’s heavy on shag carpeting, for one thing, though the listing promises that the original floors are beneath. There are three bedrooms, a sunroom, a finished basement with a full bath, and a driveway with a garage and a carport.
