No-Fee Bushwick Unit With 'Dutch' Dining Room, Stained Glass Wants $3,200
With fretwork and built-ins, this floor-through apartment in Bushwick looks much as it might have when it was new.
This early 20th century apartment in Bushwick looks much as it might have when it was new, apart from some 21st century appliances. It takes up the first floor of 1522 Putnam Avenue, a two-story two-family made of oatmeal-colored brick with neo-Classical keystones and a deep Beaux-Arts cornice festooned with garlands.
Built sometime between 1906 and 1916, old maps show, it’s just south of the Myrtle-Broadway M/L stop not far from Irving Square Park among similar brick rows. Inside, the unit has high ceilings, parquet, fretwork, moldings, and six-panel doors.
The layout is flexible, with five rooms, including a double parlor in the front, dining room in the rear, and a middle room originally intended as a bedroom. The kitchen, bathroom, and a walk-in closet are along the side.
In the front parlor is a bay window and parquet that continues through the main rooms. A wide doorway with fretwork separates the first and second parlor. The bedroom in the center is brightened by an internal stained glass window, and a built-in wardrobe comprises drawers, closets, mirror, and shelf.
In the rear, the “Dutch dining room” mentioned in an early ad consists of a coffered ceiling, plate rail, and built-in buffet with mirror and carved fruit.
In the kitchen, where there is a built-in dish cupboard, a wainscot of original subway tile covers the walls and a stainless steel stove sits on a porcelain hex tile hearth. The bathroom is similarly outfitted with a clawfoot tub, original corner wall-hung sink, period medicine cabinet, and modern tile floor.
There are five closets altogether, including one near the entrance. The lobby and stairwell of the building also has an old-timey feel with varnished woodwork, stained glass, and an embossed wainscot — perhaps Lincrusta — finished to resemble leather.
Agent Rasmus Foyer of Highline Residential will be holding by-appointment showings Saturday and Sunday on March 16, 17, and 23 from 2 to 5 p.m. Available April 1, the no-fee apartment is priced at $3,200 a month. Worth it?
