Carroll Gardens Community Leader Forced to Move

Today The New York Post tells the story of Cecilia Maniero Cacace, a 76-year-old life-long Carroll Gardens resident and community leader who is being forced to move out of the area because the building in which she rents is being sold. Cacace served on Community Board Six from 1982 to 2008, and was instrumental in bringing Valentino Park to Red Hook. In the ’70s and ’80s, she organized festivals in Carroll Park. Borough President Marty Markowitz did not appoint her to another term at CB6 because she was an outspoken opponent of Barclays Center and Atlantic Yards, according to the Post. Her apartment is $500 a month, and she plans to move in with one of her sons in Wisconsin. The Carroll Gardens Neighborhood Association is throwing her a tribute party and fundraiser Sunday in hopes to raise enough to subsidize her rent or find her an arrangement where she can work as a “granny” au pair or doorman. “Oh, my God! I don’t want to leave. I’ve been here all my life,” Cacace told the Post.
