Within the small Carroll Gardens Historic District, this 1880s brownstone offers up the signature deep garden space of the neighborhood along with some original details, including marble mantels, stained glass and wood floors.

The 16-foot-wide Neo-Grec at 334 President Street dates to 1881, according to the designation report, when it and 11 neighbors in the row were built by developer and builder William J. Bedell. A different Bedell, Chester, was named as the owner in an 1882 Brooklyn Daily Eagle article about the rapid rise of new residences in South Brooklyn. At the time the article noted that all but three of the 12 two story and basement houses with brownstone fronts were occupied.

While some of its neighbors in the row have lost original details, No. 334 still retains its rusticated basement, finely detailed door surround and bracketed cornice. Not intact is the 19th century fencing that would have enclosed the front garden and which is visible in the historic tax photo.

A single-family, the brownstone is set up as a two-family with a garden apartment and a duplex above. It hasn’t changed family hands since the 1980s but appears neat as a pin and has had some updates, including the addition of central air and a renovated kitchen.

The owner’s duplex includes the parlor level with original stair, wood floors and a marble mantel in the front parlor. Pocket doors lead to the dining room where there is another marble mantel along with tin ceilings and some recessed lighting. The room is open to the kitchen, with an island separating the two. The kitchen, which has access to a rear deck, has a plentiful number of wood cabinets, another stone-topped island and skylights.

Upstairs are three bedrooms, a full bath and laundry. The street-facing bedroom is the most generously sized and has another mantel, picture rails, a ceiling medallion and a door providing direct access to the bathroom.

That full bath has a niche with a cast-iron tub, black-and-white floor tiles and white fixtures.

The listing includes some photos of the garden apartment, which includes another marble mantel along with wainscoting and wood floors in the former dining room facing the street. A pocket-sized kitchen is in the middle while the original kitchen at the rear, now used as a dining room, still has a cast iron stove in place.

The generously sized rear garden includes planting beds and two seating areas (separated by a low wall) with plenty of room for outdoor dining.

Listed with Louis Esposito with Douglas Elliman, the property is priced at $2.995 million. Worth the ask?
