Carroll Gardens Duplex Condo With Beamed Ceilings, Exposed Brick Asks $875K

Here’s a Carroll Gardens condo with a loft-like feel that’s a “rare treat for a creative soul,” according to the listing. To put that another way, the unit — one of 12 in a former milk factory at 395 Smith Street — has some quirks, which some will find charming, others less so.
It’s a duplex, with a lower level that’s partially below grade, and not exactly flooded with sunlight. The living room is windowless, though some light comes in via rows of glass blocks in the ceiling, which on top are open to the upstairs “library.”
For that matter the upstairs doesn’t get a ton of light either; its two bedrooms have one window apiece (a small one in one case), and there’s a windowless office space. The exception is the aforementioned “library,” which has a bank of windows overlooking Smith Street.

Among the things you’ll spy from there is F and G trains rattling in and out of the subway tunnel on their way to and from Carroll Street station.
Like we said, the place has its quirks, but it doesn’t lack character. Architectural details include open wood ceiling beams, exposed steel beams, exposed and painted brick, a steel and glass balustrade, and more of those glass blocks.
There’s central air condition and a video intercom; as noted, for both better and worse, the train is nearby. Montly charges are on the low side, at $689.
Listed by Rezwan Sharif and Helen Chee of Compass — who’ll be showing it at open houses Thursday (6:30-7:30 p.m. ) and Sunday (1-3 p.m. ) — the unit is asking $875,000. What do you think of it?
