This 1920s one-bedroom has a new Ikea kitchen with blue cabinets, original parquet floors and woodwork, and a low monthly maintenance fee. It’s located on the second floor of 549 41st Street, a Finnish co-op that faces the neighborhood’s eponymous Sunset Park.
Known as the Parkside, the two-building complex was designed by architect Eric O. Holmgren and completed in 1927, according to the certificate of occupancy. Holmgren also designed the earliest Finnish co-operative buildings in the neighborhood, Alku and Alku Toinen.
The four-story, 40-unit co-op wraps around a shared courtyard. The tops of the austere, nearly plain buildings hint at neo Classical ornament with keystones on arches, geometric friezes and diamond patterns rendered in two shades of creamy yellow brick.
Fairly modest with only three rooms, the unit has a long entry hall with a niche near the door that might accommodate coats on hooks. The living room isn’t huge but it does have windows on two exposures and space for books and lounging.

The updated kitchen has a wood floor, wood counter, modern blue cupboards, white square tile on the walls and space for a table. The parquet, original wood work and picture frame moldings continue into the bedroom.
The bathroom was updated before the unit last changed hands and has white wall tile with a beige border and beige floor tile. There are three closets, along with additional dedicated storage in the building.
The walkup building is self managed and has solar panels on the roof, shared laundry and bike storage.
The apartment’s maintenance is $501 a month. It last sold in 2017 for $400,000. Listed by Franco Rinaldi of Compass, it’s now asking $449,000.
