Fort Greene Art Deco Studio With Steel Windows, Foyer, Separate Kitchen Asks $2,800 a Month
This studio for rent in one of the neighborhood’s nicest and biggest prewar co-ops has attractive original details, a separate kitchen, and good storage space.
For devoted minimalists or those who need a place to hang their hat in Fort Greene, this studio in one of the neighborhood’s nicest and biggest prewar co-ops has attractive original details, a separate kitchen, and good storage space. Art Deco-era features include original steel casement windows, a beamed ceiling, baseboard moldings, and hardwood floors.
It’s located on the third floor of 101 Lafayette Avenue, a 17-story apartment house that opened in 1932 on the site of the demolished University Club and is now a co-op known as The Griffin.
Designed by architect Frederick H. Klie, the red brick Art Deco building has an elegant arched entrance with geometric and Middle Eastern motifs rendered in colored terra-cotta. Similar upper-story details were captured in a photograph when the building was under construction.
The apartment opens to a proper foyer leading to three good-size closets. The main room is almost 19 feet long and has room for a bed, desk, and lounging.
The adjacent u-shaped kitchen is basic but appears freshly updated with white Shaker style cabinets, composite counters, square white wall tile, and square beige floor tile. Its breakfast nook contains the second of the apartment’s two steel windows, an eye-catching focal point of the unit.
An apparently original black tile border survives in the bathroom, which has been updated with marbled square tile and a wood vanity.
Listed by Steve Brady of Corcoran, the apartment is priced at $2,800 a month. Worth it?
